Sociological and Psychological Implications
Women in the Middle East- In the society in which they lived, they were not given any power. Shahrazad gave the women of ancient and modern times a heroine on which they can hold onto. Instead of the blatant, blusterous show of power that the males of the society had, they have the power to influence passively. Since they are not given the power, they must use the cunning and guile to obtain it, or to direct their husband's or father's power.
Power- This is a huge underlying theme in the entirety of The Arabian Nights. The stories cover life, love, good versus evil, quest for spiritual perfections, human desire and relationships between the sexes, but the underlying theme is power. Morals of justice and strength are explored. Again, woman, who are given very little power over their own lives, are told of, showing their courage amidst adversary.
Influence on European culture- These stories gave an insight into the world of the Middle East. The European cultures are fascinated with the eroticism of the tale. Since it became known during the eighteenth century, writers have utilized it for inspiration. It has inspired numerous adaptations of written works, art pieces, musical works, and even Hollywood works.
